Das Vierspartentheater in Mannheim wurde von Kurfürst Carl Theodor als „stehende Bühne“ 1839 der städtischen Verantwortung unterstellt. Damit ist das Nationaltheater Mannheim das älteste kommunale Theater der Welt.
