Woody Guthrie schrieb den Song über die Wanderarbeiter ("Hobos") in den USA 1941. "Pastures of Plenty" basiert auf der traditionellen englischen Ballade "Pretty Polly", der Text ist inspiriert von John Steinbecks "The Grapes of Wrath". Coverversionen des Liedes wurden u.a. von Odetta, Pete Seeger und Bob Dylan eingespielt.
