Der spanische Komponist war Chorknabe an der Kathedrale von Valencia. Martín y Soler studierte bei Giovanni Battista Martini in Bologna und zog 1775 nach Madrid. Weitere Stationen waren Neapel, Wien, Sankt Petersburg - wo er Hofkomponist von Katharina der Großen war - sowie London. Martín y Soler schrieb zahlreiche Opern und Ballette.
