Der Komponist, Dirigent und Erfinder des Sousaphons schuf Operetten und Militärmusik (bekannt wurden seine Märsche wie "Stars and Stripes forever"). Sousa trat u.a. auf der Pariser Weltausstellung 1900 auf.
