George Gershwins jüngerer Bruder wurde als Israel Gershowitz 1896 in New York geboren. Ira Gershwin schrieb für zahlreiche Broadway-Produktionen George Gershwins (u.a. "Porgy and Bess") die Libretti und Liedtexte. Nach dem Tode seines Bruders verfasste Ira Texte für Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern und Kurt Weill.
Von Ira Gershwin stammen die Texte der Jazz-Standards "Lady Be Good", "Fascinating Rhythm", "Someone to Watch Over Me", "I Got Rhythm", "I Loves You, Porgy", "I Got Plenty o’ Nuttin’", "Bess, You Is My Woman Now", "It Ain’t Necessarily So", "They Can’t Take That Away from Me", "A Foggy Day", "Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off" und "The Man I Love".
