Der 1941 in Prattville geborene Soulsänger wuchs in Detroit auf, sang zunächst in Kirchenchören und Gospelgruppen und ging 1964 zu Atlantic Records. Seinen größten Erfolg "In the Midnight Hour" nahm er bei Stax auf. Kurze Auftritte hatte Pickett in den Filmen "The Blues Brothers" und "The Commitments". Seit den 1980er Jahre kam Pickett zunehmend mit dem Gesetz in Konflikt: Prügeleien, extremer Alkohol- und Drogenkonsum brachten ihm mehrere Gefängnisstrafen ein. Für sein 1999er Comeback-Album "It’s harder now" erhielt er einen Grammy.
