Die schottische Rockband um Jim Kerr gründete sich 1978. Der Bandname ist eine Anspielung auf David Bowies Song „The Jean Genie" („He’s so simple minded he can’t drive his module / He bites on the neon and sleeps in the capsule"). Die Lieder der Simple Minds beziehen zunehmend Position zu politischen und gesellschaftlichen Themen. Der Song „Belfast Child" (1989) über den Nordirlandkonflikt ist einer ihrer größten Hits.
