Der russisch-US-amerikanische Komponist, Musiktheoretiker und Musikpädagoge entwickelte die Schillinger-Methode als System zum Komponieren. Zu seinen Schülern zählten George Gershwin, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey und Glenn Miller. Schillinger war auch - mit Leon Theremin und Henry Cowell - an der Entwicklung des Rhythmicons beteiligt.
